LeBron James Jr., also known as Bronny James, was the 55th overall pick in the second round for the 2024 L.A. Lakers. Many people are upset because they believe he doesn't deserve the spot on the team, feeling that he secured the spot due to his soon-to-be Hall of Fame father, LeBron James Sr. During the NBA preseason, the father and son duo shared the court for the first time, making history as the first time a father and son played on the same team in the NBA. Here are a few pointers I have gathered from Bronny James' short NBA career:
Even if someone helps you get into a position, you still have to work hard to succeed.
Bronny James worked tirelessly to achieve his current position. Despite his father leveraging his position with the Lakers to persuade them to draft Bronny, turning his dream into a reality, Bronny's achievements speak for themselves. He was a high school All-American and played Division 1 basketball at the University of Southern California. This indicates that Bronny earned his opportunity through hard work and perseverance, even if he didn't have a great freshman season.
You still need to have the necessary skills to be considered for the NBA.
Standing at 6'2" and possessing both athleticism and an NBA-ready physique, Bronny James demonstrated his readiness during his time in college. Had it not been for a cardiac arrest before his college season began, Bronny might have had an even better college career.
You have to take advantage of the opportunity given to you.
While Bronny may not be NBA-ready right now, he finds himself in an ideal situation for development. With a 4-year guaranteed contract and top priority in the NBA G-League, he can learn the ropes of the NBA from one of the greatest players of all time—his father. Despite the pressure of making an NBA roster, Bronny can develop with minimal pressure from his team.
Don't let others' opinions dictate your actions.
Bronny James appears to be unfazed by the opinions of others, focusing on his game and not letting media or blogger commentary affect him. He is taking everything in stride and remaining locked in, showing an impressive level of maturity and mental toughness. Follow his example and focus on your goals, regardless of what others say.
Bronny is already successful by making it to the NBA and playing with his father—a unique feat in NBA history. It's important to remember that even when opportunities are presented to you, you still need to be prepared to make the most of them. As the adage goes, it's better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared for it.
